This is my third convo with the porn icon, marking a "continuation" (not a comeback!) of his career at 60. I'm not sure why, but our talks are not only among Caftan's raunchiest, but also the deepest.
Happy mid-April weekend, Caftaners! My feelings this week have bounced around as much as my retirement account. But for once I’m not going to exhaust myself (and all of you) with my typical rant about the hell we are living through and instead will get right to the point: Porn vet Tom Chase—whom I know many of you love because my posts with him have a zillion times more views than literally any other Caftan posts—is back in business, fulfilling his promise to start making porn again at age 60.
He’s making it right out of his Portland, Oregon, home with his husband Gordon (serving as both porn partner and cameraman) and special guests including Johnny Hazzard, Devin Moss and, perhaps to come, Colton Ford and Dallas Steele (whom I interviewed last December). It’s available via his pages on OnlyFans and Just for Fans—the difference being (as he explains in our chat) that the OnlyFans one is free and will give you free non-porn and non-workout vids but you have to pay a la carte for the porn and workout, and the JFF is more a conventional all-included subscription.
Tom sent me the vids and they are HOT. But as we discuss, I think they’re particularly hot because it’s so rare in porn—even in our DIY era, it seems—where we see older gay men having sex with each other, done in a way that feels very matter-of-fact and doesn’t seem to be trying to hit all the traditional performative porn tropes. What does it feel like?
The main difference is that because I'm producing everything on my own with my husband Gordon, there's less pressure and stress. If I'd come back through the studios, I'd have only signed up for a two-hour day, not an eight-hour one like it used to be. But now for Gordon and me, most of the work comes in the editing. I miss the promotion power of Falcon and Colt, but I feel more in control of my image now.
I really don't want to call this a comeback—it's a continuation of what I started, without having to fly down from Portland to San Francisco or Los Angeles. Also I'm not acting but instead documenting what it's like to have sex at 60. My boner isn't exactly rigid anymore. I'll go a little soft halfway through a fuck scene. My hole isn't as pretty as when I was 30. It took guts to put myself in front of the camera with the skin of an aging bodybuilder that's a little bit crepe-y from tanning.

And what are the platforms you're offering the content over?

Yeah, a lot of my friends from the industry in the nineties are fully aware of this and cultivating projects to promote gay sex in their sixties and seventies. I'm showing the reality of it. Are you able to forget about the camera more now that there's not a director calling for a million different shots and positions and basically the camera is just following you?
Yes. Gordon is the cameraman and we've learned to get lots of lighting, but you're correct, we're shooting in real time. There really isn't any direction. Gordon is just following along with the sex that I'm having and he knows now through experience how to film it. I think the Johnny Hazzard one is the most beautiful I've posted so far. That was Gordon's first time working with a camera and the lighting is a little low, but you can see that Johnny and I are genuinely into each other and we're both also very good-looking.
Yeah, I think Johnny's dadbod is very sexy because it feels real. I think he's in his late forties, so you're getting that older-younger friction, but instead of it being, say, 25 and 40, you're getting like 47 and 60.

So are the scenes totally unplanned?
I don't talk it out because that ruins it. What you're seeing is just the sex we'd normally have. The last video with Devin Moss had maybe two minutes of direction.
But after that, the greatest boner killer is direction. "Move to your right." No, no, no! Just keep fucking and we'll work around you. We have a camera where Gordon can hold it into someone's crotch while they're fucking me and he doesn't need to adjust the lighting.
So now, compared to before, I have way more control over the image I put out, which I'm much happier with than with the storylines that shaped how I was perceived in the past. However, at 60, that's not really me. I have erectile dysfunction and I have to wear a big chunky metal cockring and take a Viagra to get a boner. But when you're making gay porn in your sixties, you can get away with being naked with another guy as friends, very casual and laughing and no competition, and people will get off on it.
And that seems to be part of a general trend away from scripted storyline porn toward the OF style of "Hey, So-and-so is in town and we're gonna do a collab." I think that was part of the success the past decade of TimTales [whose German founder, Tim Krueger, died rather mysteriously recently at age 44].
